Human rights defender urgently needs your backup.
Cristina Palabay is the Secretary General of the Philippine human rights organisation Karapatan. She is in grave danger, Andy. Last week she received an anonymous text message telling her that she and several others will be killed this year.
We don’t believe this is just a threat. Hours earlier, a fellow Karapatan member – Bernardino Patigas – was shot dead. He was second on a ‘hit list’ released by unknown individuals in 2018 and picked up by national media.
Will you email the Police General and urge him to protect Cristina and other human rights defenders in the Philippines?
Yes, I’ll email him now
Human rights organisations in the Philippines, like Karapatan, have faced smear campaigns and have been tagged by the government as fronts of the Communist Party of the Philippines.
Karapatan’s members have been at the forefront of the human rights struggle in the Philippines since the time of former President Marcos’ martial law regime. Now there appears to be a concerted effort to keep them quiet.
Along with Patigas, human rights lawyer Benjamin Ramos was killed in November 2018. Both their names were on this supposed ‘hit list’ that Philippine media reported on.
This points to the gravity of the threats against Palabay.
Please act now to defend and protect human rights activists in the Philippines.
